In 395 AD, the mighty Roman Empire split into the Eastern and Western halves. While the Eastern half thrived and later became the Byzantine Empire, the Western half was conquered by the Germanic Prince Odovacar.   However, Odovacar was not Roman, and the Roman ideas and customs were soon crushed in the West.
